Summary

A Victorian scientist and inventor creates a machine for propelling himself through time, and voyages to the year AD 802701, where he discovers a race of humanoids called the Eloi。 Their gently indolent way of life, set in a decaying cityscape, leads the scientist to believe that they are the remnants of a once great civilization。 He is forced to revise this assessment when he comes across the cave dwellings of threatening ape-like creatures known as Morlocks, whose dark underground world he must explore to discover the terrible secrets of this fractured society, and the means of getting back to his own time。

A biting critique of class and social equality as well as an innovative and much imitated piece of science fiction which introduced the idea of time travel into the popular consciousness, The Time Machine is a profound and extraordinarily prescient novel。

Truth is stranger than fiction, unless it's H。G。 Wells writing the fiction。 Imaginative, vivid and fluid, The Time Machine is an ideal introduction to Wells' oeuvre。 The plot is fantastical but conveyed in a realistic style, the language is elaborate but tastefully so, and the story flows along a single track making it as easy to read as it is enjoyable。 Truth is stranger than fiction, unless it's H。G。 Wells writing the fiction。 Imaginative, vivid and fluid, The Time Machine is an ideal introduction to Wells' oeuvre。 The plot is fantastical but conveyed in a realistic style, the language is elaborate but tastefully so, and the story flows along a single track making it as easy to read as it is enjoyable。 。。。more

It's a book。 That gives mixed feelings like blends that changes at what understanding of science you have。 If you know about time it's a utopian novel。 But if you are a child it's a book of dreams and possibility- a science fiction。The writing held very well for a novel of such old times。Now it might be trivial as science have advanced。 But imagine at times when science is limited to it's infancy。 This is a master class。 Must read to younglings。 It's a book。 That gives mixed feelings like blends that changes at what understanding of science you have。 If you know about time it's a utopian novel。 But if you are a child it's a book of dreams and possibility- a science fiction。The writing held very well for a novel of such old times。Now it might be trivial as science have advanced。 But imagine at times when science is limited to it's infancy。 This is a master class。 Must read to younglings。 。。。more

I was going to read the island of dr。 Moreau but after hearing how much praise he got for the time machine and the people clamoring for another book I heard he wrote the island and people were appalled at the differences。 So I just HAD to read the time machine now。 Quite a few big words in there I had to look up。 Smart fella。 Great story though。 I’ve seen some clips of the movies and it feels a bit different so I’ll go watch them both now。 The classic and the newer one and compare them to the bo I was going to read the island of dr。 Moreau but after hearing how much praise he got for the time machine and the people clamoring for another book I heard he wrote the island and people were appalled at the differences。 So I just HAD to read the time machine now。 Quite a few big words in there I had to look up。 Smart fella。 Great story though。 I’ve seen some clips of the movies and it feels a bit different so I’ll go watch them both now。 The classic and the newer one and compare them to the book。 Then on to the island。 。。。more

What an intriguing and pleasant trip down memory lane。 "Why is it intriguing?" you may ask? I thought I read the book 10 or 15 years ago on top of having seen the movie when I was seven or eight – over 50 years ago, but I clearly do not have memories of the book! I think I just didn't read it :-(, it's so different from the movie and my memories from 50+ years ago! As is often the case, the movie is intrinsically different than the book, and my own belief is that the book is far better。 Interact What an intriguing and pleasant trip down memory lane。 "Why is it intriguing?" you may ask? This very short novel was spellbinding。 The style, pacing, and suspense reminded me of Dracula, which was written around the same time。 It was fascinating to read a book written more than 100 years ago which still has relevant messages。 I'm so glad I finally can appreciate science fiction and finally read an H。G。 Wells novel。 This very short novel was spellbinding。 The style, pacing, and suspense reminded me of Dracula, which was written around the same time。 It was fascinating to read a book written more than 100 years ago which still has relevant messages。 I'm so glad I finally can appreciate science fiction and finally read an H。G。 Wells novel。 。。。more

Can't believe I haven't read a non-children's book version of H。G。 Wells before because I've read so much about him and his ideas as one of the more imaginative intellectual titans of the early 20th century。It was an interesting listen, i'm fascinated with the idea that qualities/instincts such as courage and intelligence are simply needed adaptations to certain natural or social environments。 If you remove or ameliorate these natural and social environments then these needed qualities will also Can't believe I haven't read a non-children's book version of H。G。 Wells before because I've read so much about him and his ideas as one of the more imaginative intellectual titans of the early 20th century。It was an interesting listen, i'm fascinated with the idea that qualities/instincts such as courage and intelligence are simply needed adaptations to certain natural or social environments。 If you remove or ameliorate these natural and social environments then these needed qualities will also gradually vanish as well。。。 This is basically the divide in the book between the Morlocks a former working class that lives under ground and still has some 'tough' qualities because of their continued need to struggle for sustenance (in this case cannibalism) and the Eloi a former Upper Class who has created a perfect communist society after thousands of year BUT the consequence of this creation of a natural world of little struggle has been them losing courage and intelligence and becoming overgrown children。 I wonder if Wells had read Nietzsche yet as he was just becoming popular in the 1890s 。。。 the Eloi remind me of Nietzsche's world of the 'Last Man' 。。。more

Another re-read of a classic。 Still great。 I love the details here, especially one thing that is often overlooked in time travel stories - the machine does not move from its place, only through time。 I get annoyed when someone travels to a different place, not just a time。 And of course, that he doesn't just travel a hundred or two hundred years into the future, but hundreds of thousands。 A true classic。 Another re-read of a classic。 Still great。 I love the details here, especially one thing that is often overlooked in time travel stories - the machine does not move from its place, only through time。 I get annoyed when someone travels to a different place, not just a time。 And of course, that he doesn't just travel a hundred or two hundred years into the future, but hundreds of thousands。 A true classic。 。。。more

Incredible book and a real page turner without however lacking depth。 I don’t know if that is my purely subjective interpretation but I found it very relevant to our own time and the near future towards which we are headed!

Read it because someone, somewhere on the internet, mentioned how the plot of this novela involved 2 sub/species derived from humans, first, the domesticated vegan Eloi who are vapid, mindless and solipsistic。 Feeble but very pretty creatures who frolic around all day as children and are scared of the dark。 They live in communes where everything is provided。And the Morlocks who are wild nightmarish carnivorous nocturnal technocrats。 They exist as a hive, building and maintaining everything。 They Read it because someone, somewhere on the internet, mentioned how the plot of this novela involved 2 sub/species derived from humans, first, the domesticated vegan Eloi who are vapid, mindless and solipsistic。 Feeble but very pretty creatures who frolic around all day as children and are scared of the dark。 They live in communes where everything is provided。And the Morlocks who are wild nightmarish carnivorous nocturnal technocrats。 They exist as a hive, building and maintaining everything。 They live underground, only emerging at night to。。。 Eat the Eloi their tamed 'human' livestock。Very interesting! This book has not aged well in its social politics。 Though the narrator's voice is elegant in its story telling, it's a wonderful story by which to examine the way colonizer/zing storytelling has happened over time immemorial。 This book has not aged well in its social politics。 Though the narrator's voice is elegant in its story telling, it's a wonderful story by which to examine the way colonizer/zing storytelling has happened over time immemorial。 。。。more

POLISH VERSION BELOW // POLSKA WERSJA PONIŻEJ To be honest I was hoping for something better。 I seriously heard only good things about this book and I am a little disappointed by it。I quite didn’t understand the plot。 Like seriously, one moment some creepy guy comes in telling that he’s from the future, the next we’re in the future shaming it, and the next we’re back。 Like??? I don’t know if I’m dumb or if the plot really is this chaotic and not making any sense。On the contrary I really enjoyed POLISH VERSION BELOW // POLSKA WERSJA PONIŻEJ To be honest I was hoping for something better。 I seriously heard only good things about this book and I am a little disappointed by it。I quite didn’t understand the plot。 Like seriously, one moment some creepy guy comes in telling that he’s from the future, the next we’re in the future shaming it, and the next we’re back。 Like??? I don’t know if I’m dumb or if the plot really is this chaotic and not making any sense。On the contrary I really enjoyed Wells’ style。 I was listening to an audiobook – which was amazingly recorded by the way – and I was living for it。 I don’t even know why, it isn’t the most precious style I’ve come across in my life, but it definitely got me。 In my opinion it wasn’t so hard to understand, but it also wasn’t infantile, and it wasn’t even close to the style used in classics, for example。Do I recommend this book? Yes and no。 If you like this kind of stuff – go ahead and read it, you may even like it。 But when you’re just reading it to have your reading challenge completed, then don’t do it, you most probably will end up feeling disappointed。// // // // // // // // // // // // // // // // // // // // // // Jeśli mam być szczera to liczyłam na coś lepszego。 Naprawdę słyszałam same dobre opinie na temat tej książki i jestem teraz trochę zawiedziona。Nie całkiem zrozumiałam fabułę。 Jakby, w jednym momencie pojawia się jakiś dziwny facet mówiąc, że jest z przyszłości, potem przybywamy do przyszłości i narzekamy na nią, a potem wracamy do teraźniejszości。 Jakby???

It made me believe that time travel will one day be a thing。 It intrigued with adventure and style, while at the same time not shying away from discussing deeper topics。 I mean, do you really need anything else from a book?
